WATCH: Hartlepool United hero reveals why it feels like a fresh start at the club

Pools beat Wycombe 1-0 at Victoria Park, thanks to Fenwick’s goal, in their first league game for a month.

The striker said: “2016 is a fresh start, second half of the season, and we are one from one now, unbeaten, and hopefully we can get a little run going.

“From the start of the year training has been better.

“It feels like a bit of a different team, like everyone is grafting for each other and that spirit is back from the first five or six games of the season.

“We are having little team bonding days here and there and everyone is going in the right direction.”

Pools won four games from four at the start of the season in league and cup and sat third in League Two, but have since slipped dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Fenwick said: “People feared us for the first six games of the season.

“I think we just lost that bit of confidence after a few bad results and it feels like that is back again.

“Even when we are in training it feels like it is back.

“Hopefully we can build and if the gaffer and Sam (Collins) can bring in a few more bodies the squad gets bigger and better quality is in then we can keep churning it out.”

Pools had four league games postponed over the festive period and Fenwick believes the break may have benefitted the team.

“Everyone was itching for a game all of us were in over Christmas and I think everyone looked after themselves,” Fenwick said.

“We all were looking forward to Notts County and Carlisle before they got postponed and everyone was itching for a football match.

“We were just delighted to play when the Derby game was and we just need to keep churning the performances out now.”

Ronnie Moore handed Nathan Thomas his debut against Wycombe and the winger impressed setting up Fenwick’s goal from the left wing.

“It is a great ball by Nathan. The keeper can’t come for that and the defenders cant defend that. I am just there to tap it in.” Fenwick said.

“I always say wingers win games,”

“If you look at all the good forwards back in the day, it was always a winger that would whip a good ball in across the box, the striker would just get the glory by touching it in and finishing it off.

Thomas also impressed for his former club Mansfield against Pools earlier this season and Fenwick says the new man is a “dream.”

“I was bantering with some of the lads saying it was like Christmas Day for me Nath coming.

“I remember that game at Mansfield when he must have whipped six or seven balls into the box in the first 15 minutes.

“I remember sitting on the bench thinking I would probably have had a hat trick by now.

“It is my dream balls into the box and across the six yard box but if I get one of them a game it is a goal a week!”

Fenwick himself has had spells himself on the wing for Pools which he admitted has been difficult but was full of praise for his new teammate.

“He is a natural winger so you know what you are going to get.

“It has been difficult because it has been different bodies out there, me, Rhys, and he is just learning the role.

“Now you have that natural quality left foot, a bit like what Compo (Jack Compton) used to have.

“Nath’s first thing is going to be, ‘I am going to put the ball into the box,’ so my first thing is going to be I am going to get in the right position so it is nice for me as well.”

The Pools defence held strong in the face of Wycombe’s aerial threat towards the end of the game and Fenwick praised his side’s back-line.

“Fair play to the four of them and Trev (Trevor Carson), they have dealt with everything today.

“You look at Wycombe sixth in the league and Plymouth second, it is absolute boom ball, get the ball from the centre half and boot it forward as fast as they can and get on the seconds.

“So fair play to the five of them they have handled it all game.

“I know they were dropping the last ten minutes and they were getting that little bit of momentum going but we have stayed strong as a unit and churned out a good performance and a massive win.”
