The event in Greatham Hall Gardens within the private grounds of the Hospital of God is due to take place on Sunday, February 16, between 1pm-4.30pm.

Held every year, it sees visitors walk through the wood on a specially laid out trail to enjoy thousands of the flowers in full bloom.

Storm Dennis is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to many parts of the UK this weekend.

Brian Walker, of Greatham in Bloom, said: “High winds is the one reason we would have to close the wood where the snowdrops are, for fear of falling branches.

“This is our biggest fundraiser so fingers crossed that Dennis will not spoil our day.”

Whatever the weather, organisers will open Greatham Community Centre on Sunday for refreshments and stalls, including plants, bric-a-brac, books and crafts.

They will be keeping an eye on the wind hoping that they will be able to allow people into the wood to the snowdrops.

Paul Gundersen, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said: “Although Storm Dennis is currently not expected to be as severe as Ciara, disruption is still likely.”

People are advised to keep up to date with the forecast using the Met Office’s website, app or social media.
