Happy Top Gun Day - apparently.

Yes, the 80s US Airforce outing starring Tom Cruise now has its own day (and what doesn't, these days?).

May 13 2016 marks 30 years since the film was released. Well, not quite. It was released in the USA on May 16 1986, but the guys who founded Top Gun Day cocked up the first time they decided to mark the occasion.

The original website http://www.topgunday.com/ was registered in October 2008, but most of the posts date from February 2009 (including the one explaining the date).

As well as dusting off your DVD (or VHS) of the film, founders suggest you change your Facebook and Twitter avatars to Top Gun-related pics, don aviator sunglasses, and use as many quotes from the movie as possible.

Here are a few ideas:

Maverick: I feel the need...

Maverick, Goose: ...the need for speed!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maverick: Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby.

Air Boss Johnson: Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.

Goose: The defense department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid.

Charlie: I'll have what he's having. Hemlock, is it?

Maverick: Ice water.

Jester: That was some of the best flying I've seen to date - right up to the part where you got killed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maverick: I think I'll go embarrass myself with Goose.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Stinger: [to Maverick, with Goose to his right] Maverick, you just did an incredibly brave thing.

[Long pause]

Stinger: What you should have done was land your plane! You don't own that plane! The taxpayers do! Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash!
