Woman injured and two horses put to sleep after car crashes into barn in Trimdon Grange

After an hour-long rescue, the woman was rushed to the major trauma unit at James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough for a suspected head injury.

Sadly, two horses which were in the stable at the time had to be put to sleep by a vet.

The incident happened around 11.25am on Sunday, on Salters Lane, in Trimdon Grange.

It involved a Nissan Qashqai which had crashed through some gates, into a field and then into the brick barn.

The woman, aged 28 and from Bishop Auckland, was the passenger in the car and the male driver suffered shock though is not said to have been injured.

Three fire engines, from Peterlee, Wheatley Hill, and the special rescue unit from Bishop Auckland attended.

A spokesman for Peterlee Fire Station said: “This was a one-vehicle road traffic collision on Salters Lane.
“The car had came off the road and went into the barn.
“Two horses were in the barn and the vet had to attend and put the horses to sleep.
“The female passenger needed to be cut free.”

Police attended the incident and the cause is being investigated.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We got a report of a road traffic collision where the car had went through some gates and into a field.
“We had a report of a female wih a head injury.
“She was taken to the major trauma unit at James Cook University Hospital.”
