And bosses at Hartlepool Borough Council have thanked the motorists of the town for their backing while the work was under way on Hart Lane.

Full resurfacing work started on Hart Lane in the town on Tuesday this week.

It was due to finish yesterday, subject to the weather conditions, said a spokesman for Hartlepool Borough Council.

Sections of the busy route into town were closed while workmen carried out the programme.

The council spokesman added: “In the course of the roadworks, we have had a combination of road closures and temporary traffic lights in operation.

“We have done our best to minimise any inconvenience to road users.

“We would like to thank people for their understanding while the work was being carried out.”

Notice of the work was posted on the local authority’s Facebook page where it reported that the section of Hart Lane between Duke Street and Thornhill Gardens was due to be closed for three days, and would reopen each evening to help minimise disruption.

The spokesman said: “This was a full resurfacing because the carriageway had become very worn.

“It was the section from Jesmond Road to the Eden Park Estate and it was for a full resurfacing of the carriageway.”

The programme also involved work to resurface the traffic light junction at Serpentine Gardens.

Officials said that any last carriageway re-marking work which was needed would be carried out on Sunday.
