Young managers deserve better opportunity to shine, says Ronnie Moore after Sheringham sacking

Moore should have been shaking the hand of the former Champions League hero when Stevenage come to Victoria Park in a vital League Two match on Tuesday night.

But Sheringham was sacked this week after only 29 league matches in charge, an ignominious end to his first taste of management.

Moore, heading towards 1,000 games as a manager, could have been forgiven for taking a selfish view and feeling frustration that Stevenage could have an upturn in fortunes, as so often happens after a club dispenses with the services of a boss following a poor run of results.

However, Moore was saddened by a departure of the former Millwall, Nottingham Forest, Spurs and Manchester United forward.

Sheringham was removed from his post after eight matches without a win and Stevenage eight points above the bottom two.

“I think it’s very harsh on Teddy,” said Moore, whose side went into today’s programme four points behind Stevenage but with five games in hand.

“I don’t think the young managers get the opportunity these days.

“How long has he been there? Seven months?

“I fear for the young mangers coming through now. Everything is instant.

“Everyone can’t win, it’s impossible to win every week.

“Teddy’s done a reasonable job. OK, he’s not pulled up any trees, but he’s learning his trade and they have chopped his legs off really.

“Certainly a lot sooner than people thought.”
