These are the best and worst weather days in UK - according to 30 years of research

The UK will typically experience the worst weather of the year today (19 Dec 2019), according to 30 years of weather data.

With the shortest day of the year falling just days later, experts have revealed 19 December is most likely to see the coldest, wettest or windiest weather of the year.

Conversely, 21 July is most likely to see ‘perfect’ conditions.

When is the best weather day of the year?

The worst weather day of the year was revealed after an extensive study was conducted to find out when Brits across the country are guaranteed to get the best weather conditions.

In London, 24 July was named the day when the best weather is most likely to greet the capital.

Bristol, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle will all be blessed with the best weather the day before, on 23 July. And Brighton and Hove will follow London the day after, on 25 July.

A spokesperson for Andrews Sykes Heater Hire, which commissioned the research with DTN, a global provider of independent weather insights, said, “Complaining about the weather is part of our national identity.

"So we thought it would be interesting to flip the conversation on its head and see once and for all when the nation is most likely to be content with their lot.

“DTN’s massive data set of legacy weather data allowed us to pinpoint these days in some of the UK’s major cities - days which we hope Brits are marking in their calendars as some sure-fire good weather days.”

The study

To calculate the dates when ideal weather was most likely to occur, a study of 2,000 Brits was conducted to uncover the temperature and weather conditions they consider to be the most comfortable.

These optimum conditions were then compared against weather forecasts in each city over the last 30 years to find out when they were most likely to occur.

This score considered measured weather conditions such as temperature, rainfall, windspeed and cloud cover.

Of the cities highlighted in the study, Edinburgh and Glasgow preferred their weather coolest, choosing 20 degrees Celsius as their ideal temperature. Residents of Southampton and London like things to be warmer, opting for a reading of 23 degrees Celsius on the thermostat on their perfect weather day.

It also emerged the average Brit will talk about the weather four times a day.

A third use the topic to break the ice with a stranger and one in five find meteorological discussions genuinely interesting.

And 46 per cent of those surveyed believe they speak about the weather simply because "it’s the British thing to do".

The ideal weather conditions

The study also found 28 per cent of Brits are most likely to mention the weather in a positive way when it is sunny, while rain is most likely to earn our ire.

In fact, the ideal weather preferred by Brits consists of a light breeze and mild temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius.
