If you’ve ever dreamt of leaving work behind for a little while and travelling to a place somewhere far away, then this sabbatical to the Bahamas could be the perfect opportunity for you to do so.

Short term letting company Airbnb and the Bahamas National Trust have teamed up to offer a two month long sabbatical to five people who are interested in sustainability and preserving natural resources.

Help expose the unique culture and natural resources of the Bahamas to visitors

The sabbatical will see the successful applicants live on three of the Bahamas’ family islands, becoming part of the community in a country made up of more than 700 islands.

The Airbnb sabbatical page says, “You’ll spend two months helping expose its unique culture and rich natural resources to a new wave of visitors.

“The Bahamas Sabbatical was designed to directly benefit local communities while supporting efforts toward a sustainable future.

“Over the course of the program, you’ll support important preservation projects inside the country’s national parks led by the Bahamas National Trust, and help design future Experiences centered around The Bahamas’ unique cultural heritage.”

The Bahamas National Trust has served as the national park service of The Bahamas since 1959, continuously working to preserve the natural environment of the 32 special national parks.

During the sabbatical the applicants will help restore coral reefs in Andros, support ethical fishing in Exuma and promote traditional agriculture in Eleuthera.

How long does the sabbatical last?

This sabbatical lasts for eight weeks, and will see the successful applicant visit the three islands of Andros, Exuma, and Eleuthera, where they will stay with local hosts.

The sabbatical runs from 1 April to 31 May 2020.

Airbnb will cover your travel expenses, food and accommodation for the duration of the trip.

How do I apply?

Applications are now open, but must be received by 11.59pm on 18 February 2020. Applicants must be aged 18 or over.

Eric Carey, Executive Director of the Bahamas National Trust, said, "The Bahamas is open for business and while we work to restore parts of the archipelago devastated by Hurricane Dorian, the vast majority is ready for visitors.

"Partnering with Airbnb is an incredible opportunity to help further preserve our culture and resources and share our diverse country and the Bahamian way of life with the world."
