Anth Hardy calls on old pal Callum Winton ahead of English light-welterweight title bout with Joe Hughes

Callum Winton has returned to the Gus Robinson Developments gym to spar with Hardy ahead of his challenge for the vacant English light-welterweight championship.

Hardy takes on Joe Hughes in Bath on Saturday night when he will fight for his maiden title and box his first 10-rounder.

That is where Winton comes in.

The unbeaten lightweight retired after just four bouts and was one of Hartlepool’s most gifted juniors and amateur boxers, winning a Junior ABA title during his time at the Catholic Club.

“As soon as Callum saw about the fight, he offered to help,” said Hardy.

“Callum is the right height, with a very effective left hook and it’s been a really good preparation.

“With the fight being short notice, we haven’t had much time for sparring.

“We’ve fitted in two 10-round spars with Callum doing a number of the rounds.

“I’d do a couple of rounds with Callum, then someone else would do a couple and Callum would get back in fresh and do more.

“It was perfect for me and I’ve been up early to put in six-mile runs before going to work.

“I know I have the fitness to do the 10 rounds so I must concentrate and do everything right in the fight.”

Hardy has his work cut out against Hughes, who has won 11 of his 12 bouts, five inside the distance.

The 24-year-old is on the home side of the card at Bath Pavillion and is in the form of his life.

But Hardy is excited by the challenge.

“I’ve done a bit research on him,” said the undefeated Horden boxer.

“He is a good boxer, a come-forward fighter who loves his left hooks.

“So I’m going to have to keep my right hand nice and high.

“He’s won amateur titles, has a good pedigree and has won all but one of his pro fights and has some belts already.

“Hughes is a lad on the rise and that’s where I want to be.

“This is a brilliant chance for me and I am looking to take it.”
