Hartlepool boxer Bobby Carter to fight in England v Scotland international at Birtley

Talented Bobby Carter is just four days away from fulfilling a boxer's dream after being selected to represent his country in an upcoming international.

The Hartlepool Catholic Club teenager will wear the England vest when fierce rivals Scotland visit the North East on Saturday.

Carter’s bout is just one of 26 contests being held at Birtley and will be the 16-year-old’s first experience on the international stage.

Hartlepool Catholic Club head coach Paul Allen has said that the national selection is a just rewards for the hard work and effort young Carter has put into the sport.

He said: “He’s a good kid, who is looking forward to his first international bout.

“Bobby’s a class act and he probably needs something like this just to gee him along.

“He was fantastic in last year’s Junior ABA Championship when he got to the final.

“Sadly, he did not really turn up on the day but these things happen. But he beat some really good kids to get to a major national finalso boxing for England is no surprise to us.

“The England coaches are pleased with Bobby and his performance in training.”

Carter, who fights in the U63kilo class, is the son of former National amateur champ David Carter, who represented Boys Welfare.

As well as following in his father’s footsteps, Carter will add his name to a growing list of Catholic Club boxers who have gone on to be called up for their country.

“Bobby will join the class of the likes of Amanda Coulson, Mark Smith, Tommy Winspear, Kevin and Steve Cosgrove, Dwayne Thomas, James Rooney and Michael Boocock in representing their country.” said Allen.

“We are all very proud of Bobby and what he has achieved.”

Despite this pressure, Allen is confident the young boxer can put in a match-winning performance.

He said: “His preparation is going well, he’s fit, up for it and has been doing plenty of sparing.

“I agree [that Bobby is a special talent]. But it will be up to Bobby on the day once that bell rings.”
