Hartlepool boxer Peter Cope ready to Rumble in title re-match with Middlesbrough’s John Green

Cope wants to put the record straight against his rival, from Middlesbrough, a week on Sunday when they scrap it out for the second time in 10 months for the belt.

Not that the Hartlepool fighter lost the first time they met, he actually beat Green over 10 enthralling rounds at South Shields.

But Cope was miffed, to say the least, by the points margin of 96-95 and will step out at the Stadium of Light desperate to make it more emphatic this time.

“I do think I have a bit of a point to prove,” he said. “I’m not sure how that score came about.

“I’m aiming to win but also win better this time.”

There was no doubting Green’s tenacity at Temple Park but the Gus Robinson Developments corner were not the only people in the hall to be surprised by the closeness of Andrew Wright’s scoreline.

Green, to his credit, agreed at yesterday’s media conference at the Stadium of Light that the result was too close.

But Cope told SportMail he intends to leave absolutely nothing to question at Sunderland’s football ground, where he won his first belt in 2012.

“Winning is what matters and I don’t want to leave it to any doubt,” he said. “But I want to give a better performance this time.

“I want to show the improvements I’ve been making. I am a better boxer now.”

Cope has happy memories of the Stadium of Light, having beaten another Teessider there, Redcar’s Gavin Reid, to lift the International Masters super-bantamweight belt.

“It’s a great stadium and a great occasion,” said the 24-year-old. “I think my fans won a lot of admirers that day for their numbers, colour and noise.

“The Rumble is always a fabulous day and I’m hoping my people will be there again. I must thank them, as always, for their support. I’d be no where without them.”
