Coach - and dad - Peter Snr, told SportMail that training has gone “great” ahead of the Northern Area super-featherweight title fight against Middlesbrough’s John Green at South Shields.

The 23-year-old Hartlepool southpaw has sparred with friend and town boxing neighbour, Martin Ward, and North-East fighter “Lightning” Lee Mould.

And those sessions are getting young Cope ready for what they expeect to be a “dangerous” match for the vacant reional belt.

“You could not ask for better sparring,” said Cope Snr.

“When you watch Peter and Martin sparring, you would not think the two were mates the way they go at it.

“They hold nothing back and it’s great for Peter.

“Martin boxed for the world title this year and he looks like he has a Commonwealth fight next so the sessions with him are really productive.

“Lee is a very good kid himself and can hit.

“So with both lads we are getting the best of both worlds for Peter - Lee for the strength and Martin for the speed.

“John Green will be a dangerous fighter.

“He’s made a cracking start as a pro and they must fancy it, they wanted this fight.

“Things have gone great so far in training and Peter’s up for it.”

Peter Cope’s confrontation with the Boro fighter is one of two 10-rounders on the Steve Wraith-promoted show at Temple Park.

The English super-flyweight championship battle between Anthony “Babyface” Nelson and Terry Broadbent, from Leeds, tops the Sunday afternoon bill.

There is a potential six-round classic between Tommy Ward and Esham Pickering as the new kid on the block tackles an old champion who has been around the block.

Pickering, now in his third decade as a pro, was a former British, Commonwealth and European champion, who has returned to the ring after a two-year hiatus.

Ward has won all nine of his contests and is tipped for big things by manager Dave Garside and coach Neil Fannan.

And Peter Cope’s Gus Robinson Developments team-mates, Daniel Cope and Anth Hardy, are both in action too.

Daniel will box Barnsley’s Jamie Zaszlos, who Hardy defeated last time out, while the Horden southpaw faces veteran Birmingham fighter Delroy Spencer.
