Hartlepool United had to settle for a draw against Carlisle United with neither side able to break the deadlock on a scrappy night at Brunton Park.

Brennan Dickenson struck the bar with Pools goalkeeper Ben Killip beaten in the first half while Graeme Lee’s side had their own misfortune with the woodwork in the second half as Mark Howard was somehow able to divert David Ferguson’s first time effort onto the bar.

Reagan Ogle came close to stealing the points with the final kick of the game when he got on the end of a deep Nicky Feathertstone freekick which Howard was again on hand to prevent.

In truth, neither side did enough to merit the three points and following their late defeat at Bristol Rovers at the weekend Pools will be pleased to have avoided another late defeat here.

We are underway at Brunton Park

The atmosphere is building here at Brunton Park as we await the arrival of the two teams.

Hartlepool Mail’s Joe Ramage gives his verdict on Graeme Lee’s starting XI to take on Carlisle United.

“I’m not surprised Graeme Lee has opted to go with the same side, as far as he could, that performed so well at Bristol on Saturday.

“Despite the disappointment, Lee was upbeat about his side’s performance, and rightly so, as Pools really should have came away from the Memorial Stadium with points to show for their efforts.

“Jamie Sterry’s absence is, of course, forced due to his late red card but Reagan Ogle will slot in comfortably in that role - Ogle perhaps unlucky not to have been given more opportunities after an excellent display in the FA Cup second round win over Lincoln City.

“Pools should be confident based off Saturday’s performance and if they can put on a similar display here this evening they will back themselves to take something from the game.”

And here is how the hosts line up with just one change themselves as Omari Patrick replaces Corey Whelan

Graeme Lee will be without fullback Jamie Sterry for tonight’s trip to Carlisle United after the 26-year-old was shown a straight red card in Saturday’s defeat at Bristol Rovers.

Sterry tangled with forward Aaron Collins deep into stoppage time and was dismissed by referee Carl Brook and will now serve a two match ban for Pools having been sent off earlier in the season against Forest Green Rovers.

Reagan Ogle is expected to deputise for Sterry as Lee looks for his side to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat.

Hartlepool United manager Graeme Lee is looking forward to the trip to Brunton Park as Pools look to get back to winning ways in League Two.

Lee cut a dispirited figure in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat at Bristol Rovers with Pools wasting a number of opportunities to take something from the game.

But Lee believes having another game so soon can be the perfect tonic for his side.

“Whether you’re winning games or whether you lose, you want to get back on the pitch.

“But I want us to get back out there. You want to stop the worry. We just need to take our chances. If that’s on Tuesday night then bring it on.

“Carlisle away has always been one to look forward to. I can remember playing those games.

“They’re a well supported club so we’re looking forward to it, but I’m concentrating on us and our performance.”

Hartlepool United were dealt a significant blow this week when it was announced midfielder Matty Daly would be returning to Huddersfield Town.

Daly has enjoyed a breakout season on-loan at the Suit Direct Stadium this year making 27 appearances for Pools in all competitions.

But perhaps the most significant competition for Daly has been the Papa John’s Trophy with the 20-year-old scoring five times to help Pools progress to the quarter finals where they will face Charlton Athletic next week.

While his impact in the Papa John’s Trophy has been significant, perhaps his standout moment in a Hartlepool shirt came in the come from behind win against Harrogate Town with the youngster producing a special goal to seal all three points.

But Daly has been recalled to his parent club following a number of injuries to Carlos Corberán’ squad in recent weeks while COVID-19 concerns among squads still also remain present..

Pools boss Graeme Lee reacted to Daly’s exit by saying: “Huddersfield recalled him due to injuries in their first team. They wanted him back.

“It’s disappointing for us. He’s a fantastic player, we know he would have had a huge impact on the end of this season. A great lad with a great attitude and we wish him all the best.”

Hello, and welcome to Brunton Park for tonight’s League Two clash between Carlisle United and Hartlepool United.

If you’re anything like me you are probably still scratching your head as to how Pools came away from Saturday’s trip to the Memorial Stadium empty handed but Graeme Lee must find a way to pick his players up after that crushing late defeat at Bristol Rovers.

Pools travel to Brunton Park this evening to face a Carlisle side who have found a little bit of form in 2022 with seven points from a possible nine.

As always, we will have all of the team news and match updates throughout the evening here in Cumbria.
