Gary Liddle, Nicky Featherstone, David Ferguson, Gavan Holohan, Mark Shelton, Tom Crawford, Timi Odusina, Joe Grey and Josh MacDonald are Pools’ only contracted players as it stands.

But the Hartlepool boss is hopeful of tying down the likes of Jamie Sterry and Ben Killip in the coming days. And some new faces are also expected to arrive with Challinor looking to have potentially five more players tied down by the start of next week.

“There are loads imminent,” Challinor told The Mail. “Whether they get across the line is a different matter.

"We’re in a strange situation where players and agents are asking for x amount of money now and in a week’s time what they’re asking for has changed by £400 a week.

“We’ve got to put a value on a player and if it doesn’t work, not let ourselves be swayed to offering something that is out of our comfort zone. But if players come back and are more realistic then players we may have moved on from, a week down the line could then become options for us.

"I’m hopeful that by Monday we’ll have another two, three, four or potentially even five more in the building that will fill out the squad.

“When we go into our first friendly at Runcorn a week on Saturday then we’ll have 22 players, including trialists, to go there and give everyone a run out.”
