But here we are and the centre-back, who was signed on a short term deal as cover ahead of the new season, has two goals in his first three appearances for Pools.

Johnson’s current deal at Victoria Park is set to expire come the new year, but manager Dave Challinor is hoping to extend the 24-year-old’s stay.

“Hopefully he’ll be here at least for the full season,” Challinor told The Mail.

“He came in a little bit later but we’ve liked what we’ve seen. He’s left-sided and is comfortable with how we play.

"He’s physical, can defend and he can play in a three or a four and, at a push, could do a job for us at left-back.

"We lacked balance down that left side so it’s an opportunity for him and he’s slotted in well – hopefully he’ll be a success.”
