Dave Challinor looks at the differences between Hartlepool United and National League leaders Barrow following 2-2 draw

The sides ended 2019 with a 2-2 draw at Victoria Park as Pools came from behind twice to pick up a well earned point thanks to second half goals from Gavan Holohan and Ryan Donaldson.

And after beating The Bluebirds 1-0 at Holker Street back in September, Hartlepool have proven themselves more than capable of competing with the sides challenging at the top of the table.

With 19 games remaining, Dave Challinor’s side will be hoping to pick things up and join the likes of Barrow and their New Year’s Day opponents Harrogate at the right end of the table.

“I think you can take huge encouragement and motivation from games where you come up against the team who have set the benchmark in this league this season and get positive results,” said the Hartlepool manager.

“You look at where Barrow are at and what they do, they’re a good side but there’s nothing between us, it all comes down to consistency which Barrow have shown.

“That’s where we’re short at the moment, we need to have it so if we’re having an off day and playing poorly, which will happen, we find ways to still be physically at it to grind out a result.

“If we’re playing badly but can draw a game 0-0 then we do that and move on.

“The same goes when we do play well, we need to make sure we win.”
