Dave Challinor reflects on a 'strange situation' for Hartlepool United as they remain second in the National League table despite Halifax Town postponement – meanwhile Torquay United lose and Stockport County draw

Despite not having a game, it proved to be a fairly decent weekend for Hartlepool United in the National League.

Pools’ postponed match at Halifax Town gave other teams the chance to close the gap on them in the table while league leaders Torquay United had the chance to pull further away from Dave Challinor’s side in second.

But Hartlepool’s current points total and other clubs not playing meant that they were guaranteed to remain second this weekend regardless of results elsewhere. While disappointed not to have played, Challinor is pleased with how the table is looking.

“It’s a strange situation to be in where we were not playing a game but we could look at results elsewhere safe in the knowledge that we’re not moving anywhere in the table,” The Pools boss told The Mail.

“We can sit and watch results come in and hope some go in our favour but not have that negative feeling of knowing we could drop down the table regardless of what they are.”

As it turned out, most results went in Pools’ favour anyway. Current top seven teams Stockport and Altrincham drew, leaving Pools with a three and a four point gap respectively in their favour.

Top of the table Torquay were beaten 2-1 at Yeovil though they maintain their 11 point lead over Pools, who now have a game in hand.

“Hopefully we can continue what we’re doing,” Challinor added.

“Hopefully the teams who still have games in hand don’t make the most of the games in hand on us and we’re still sitting pretty not just now, but at the end of the season.”
