His strike in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Notts County at Victoria Park was his fourth in as many games and 10th in total this season.

“Get yourself in the box,” said the Pools boss. "The ball is always getting put in between the posts from Fergie [David Ferguson], Jamie [Sterry] or [Lewis] Cass and to not have Gav arriving in there is taking a huge facet away from his game.

“It’s not a case of us telling Gav something he doesn’t know. He has the energy to run forward and he can finish.

"As a midfield player, that’s something most midfield players don’t have, they’re either good at running or can finish, not always both. He’s got all of that and he just needed to get back to his game which is a pretty simple one in terms of what we require from him.

“He’s got back to that and to get four in four is a great return and he’ll be looking to continue that next weekend.”

Saturday’s win sees Pools top of the table, a point ahead of Sutton United who have four games in hand in second place.
