Former Chelsea and Norwich City goalkeeper Ben Killip hitting form at Hartlepool United but manager Dave Challinor feels there's room for improvement

Ben Killip’s return to the Hartlepool United starting line-up has marked an upturn in form for the side and the goalkeeper himself.

The England C international sat-out the opening seven matches of 2020 after being dropped from the side in favour of non-contract ‘keeper Mitchell Beeney.

Pools manager Dave Challinor defended the decision at the time as Killip ‘made mistakes’ that ultimately put his position under threat.

But since returning, the 24-year-old shot-stopper has been in fine form with three clean sheets and a penalty save in his last five matches.

The Pools manager has been pleased with Killip’s performances in recent weeks but is still looking at ways to help improve the former Chelsea and Norwich City youngster.

“We know what Ben can do and the things he can work on for me is not his technical stuff because we know he’ll make saves – it’s his decision making and concentration,” Challinor said.

“Ben has got to use this momentum and the confidence he should have to not get carried away with the things he does.

“He’s kept us in games and he can dictate the tempo when he’s got the ball in his hands so he’s just got to know when to calm things and make a good decision rather than making one save quickly turn into having to make another.

“We’ll keep working on him with that, but in terms of his overall play and performances, they’re at a level we know he can produce.”
