The 25-year-old right-back made eight senior appearances for The Magpies after progressing through the club’s youth system.

But after being reduced to EFL Trophy and cup appearances over the past two years, Sterry was released in the summer of 2020.

The defender still remained on Tyneside as he signed for Northern Premier Premier Division side South Shields in October.

He went on to make four appearances for the Mariners including a man of the match debut display against Halifax Town in the FA Cup.

Pools boss Dave Challinor had hinted at potential arrivals following injuries to Ryan Donaldson and Lewis Cass during Saturday’s FA Trophy defeat against The Shaymen. Sterry will be available for Pools’ National League match against Stockport County on Tuesday night (6pm kick-off).

Following the signing, Challinor told the club website: “Delighted to have Jamie on board with us. His pedigree and undoubtedly quality will be a big positive for us at an important time.

“We had conversations during the off season but couldn’t put a deal together that suited everyone but circumstances have changed slightly and he’s finally with us.”

“He’s trained with us and the plan was to have a chat today to get his thoughts but with the injuries we picked up at the weekend, opportunity knocks and he’ll be a really good addition to the squad. He has the ambition to get himself back into the EFL but recognised that at the minute he needs to be playing games to put himself back on the map.”
