Hartlepool United manager Darren Sarll has hinted he could still add another new face to his squad following the arrival of Crystal Palace winger Roshaun Mathurin on loan earlier this week.

The 20-year-old signed for Pools on Wednesday and is expected to add some much-needed width to Sarll's side.

The tricky winger arrives with a big reputation following a successful season with the Palace under-21s, scoring 11 goals and creating 14 assists in 38 appearances, helping his side win the Premier League International Cup.

Mathurin, who spent time in the academies of Chelsea and Spurs, caught the eye of Palace boss Oliver Glasner after impressing in a behind-closed-doors friendly and was subsequently included in the first team squad for their trip to Nottingham Forest in March.

The wideman had been linked with a move to League One, with both Northampton and Exeter rumoured to be interested in securing his services, but Pools managed to pull off a real coup by luring him to the North East.

Sarll has connections at the South London club while Lennie Lawrence took caretaker charge of the Eagles in 2012 and has a close relationship with Palace legend Dougie Freedman, who is the current sporting director at Selhurst Park.

Pools have been crying out for a winger ever since Luke Charman's injury last month, with Adam Campbell struggling to provide any natural width and looking a little disgruntled at having been moved from his favoured central role.

Supporters will be hoping that Mathurin is the right man to add balance to their side and take some of the strain off the impressive Joe Grey, who has been by far Sarll's most threatening attacking outlet so far this term.

And the good news doesn't end there for Pools fans.

Sarll has strengthened his squad considerably in recent weeks, with the loan signings of goalkeeper Brad Young, veteran frontman Gary Madine and now the highly-rated Mathurin making Pools look like a side capable of competing towards the top end of the National League table.

Even so, the boss has suggested there could still be room for one more as he continues to look to bolster his options as Pools bid to force their way into promotion contention.

"Roshaun is someone that was flagged to us," he told BBC Radio Tees Sport.

"Like everyone, you go and do your due diligence, whether that be with footage or data analysis.

"The biggest thing was the connection with Crystal Palace - I've got a very good friend there who is academy director, of course we've got Lennie Lawrence here.

"We had some really good references from people that we trust.

"When you watch Roshaun, he has some of the athletic characteristics and attributes that we really need.

"The boys out of Crystal Palace have an insane amount of technical quality and they have that mischief to their play, they're dribblers and deceivers.

"We've missed that and we just wanted some more support in that area with Charman not being fit; it's something we've addressed with the group, and also now with our recruitment.

"We keep on going, when the right player presents itself we try and act - and we can act here - and I still think there will be room for, hopefully, one more."

Sarll's side have struggled in the absence of Luke Charman, who made such a bright start to his Pools career following his summer arrival but was ruled out for at least a month following a strong challenge by Southend's Cav Miley 15 minutes into last month's goalless draw between the two sides.

The 26-year-old had been expected to be sidelined until, at least, the second half of September but Sarll is optimistic he could be in line for a return sooner than that.

He said: "He's really ahead of schedule.

"I thought he'd be the end of the month but I think that's coming a lot closer.

"Maybe, maybe, another 10 days, maybe.

"We need to make sure we give him time because Luke's coming off the back of a difficult season with injuries and so we want him to be comfortable - confidence starts with how you feel.

"We want him to feel good and we want him to feel like he's got his best football ahead of him.

"Once he ticks that box we'll get him, very, very quickly, back in our squad."

Attention now turns to this weekend's visit of Halifax, who are four places and one point worse off than Pools after an indifferent start to the new season.

Chris Millington's side reached the National League play-offs last term but lost a number of important first team players over the summer, including Jack Hunter, who signed for Pools in July, as well as defender Jamie Stott and influential midfielder Kane Thompson-Sommers, who both bagged moves to the Football League.

Pools have drawn all of their first three home matches this season - skipper Luke Waterfall has been sent off in two of those games - and are still waiting for their first win at the Prestige Group Stadium under Sarll, who is expecting a tough test against a Halifax side who have the youngest squad in the National League.

"A good performance on Saturday and a good result and we're still unbeaten at home, we want to be positive," he said.

"We want to give something back to our supporters, who have been magnificent.

"Halifax are a really good side who always overperform.

"These games are all tough, I don't think there's an easy game in this division.

"When we're at our very, very best I think we'll be difficult for anyone.

"If we can get as close as possible to those levels then I don't think there will be many teams that can stand in our way."

Sarll confirmed that goalkeeper Joel Dixon will miss Saturday's game after he was forced off in the first half of last week's stalemate with Braintree, meaning Brad Young could be in line for his Pools debut after he returned to his hometown club on a season-long loan from Leicester.

Saturday's game could come too soon for defender Dan Dodds, who has been nursing a hamstring strain in recent weeks, while former Shaymen midfielder Jack Hunter is back in contention following suspension and Gary Madine will be keen to continue building towards full fitness after making his first competitive appearance for 16 months last Saturday.
