The 2-1 defeat to Eastleigh, which saw Pools go behind after just 40 seconds, saw Challinor’s men drop to fifth in the table, with Eastleigh in seventh closing the gap to just two points.

Torquay United lead the way with 44 points but below them just six points separates Sutton United in second and Maidenhead in ninth.

Despite defeat Pools remain in a strong position and face Yeovil Town on Saturday looking to make it seven straight home wins.

When asked if he paid much attention to the league table, Challinor said: “It makes no difference until the end of May where we sit, the table will change dramatically a fair bit.

“When you get into April and May there are a lot of games, the table will change quickly.

“Where we are at the end of the season is important.

“Anything can happen in this league, we are still playing and long may that continue.”

Reflecting on the defeat at Eastleigh, Challinor told BBC Tees Sport: “We knew it would be a challenge against a team in good form, but also in terms of the conditions and pitch too, that is a challenge for us as a group.

“The manner of goals can affect you, we knew the pitch would be difficult. It was the worst possible start.

“We knew the team who made the least mistakes - and where you made the mistakes - would potentially win the game, that and set pieces would be important.

“It gave us a mountain to climb.

“We knew it would be difficult if you didn’t do the basics well, if you are not decisive in your decision making then you will be found wanting.

“The ball should be dealt with. It is a poor start, a mistake, they happen.

“It was not a great start.”

Substitute Joe Grey fired home on the volley from close range late on but it proved to be merely a consolation though, as the hosts stood strong to see out injury time and claim the three points.
