The win meant Pools achieved a club record 22 matches unbeaten in League Two as they would go on to earn promotion at the end of the season.

Just six-minutes into the second half, a long ball forward from Micky Barron found Williams who produced an excellent first touch to bring the ball under control before unleashing a dipping volley with his second to send the 3,750 travelling Poolies wild at the Darlington Arena.
Andy Monkhouse completed the rout late on with a bullet header.
Williams’ goals helped immortalise the Welsh forward into Pools folklore with his second often being hailed as one of the club’s greatest goals of the modern era.

“It was a great day especially with the fans being behind that goal and that made it more special.
“I was quite happy with the first goal actually too and again Micky played that through over the top.
“But the second goal will always live long in the memory because it was a class day and we battered them!”
