The former Morecambe forward enjoyed a three-year spell at Pools between 2015-18 and has now returned, following Mark Shelton, Gary Liddle and Timi Odusina in signing a permanent deal at the club.

A versatile and hard-working forward, Oates is a replacement for Luke James in the squad after the forward moved to Barrow following their promotion to League Two.

Oates made 44 appearances for Morecambe over the past two seasons.

Challinor said: “We all know about Rhys’ great ability, I have admired him for a few years and as a player, you know he’s got that determined attitude that we need in this squad.

"Fans know what to expect from him and he knows a few of the lads already so he is the perfect fit going into the busy season.”
