Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor and goalscorer Gavan Holohan left perplexed by Gary Liddle's unbelievable goal line clearance in 1-1 draw at Sutton United

Hartlepool United battled to earn a point at Sutton United on Saturday afternoon but things could have been a lot worse had it not been for the ‘unbelievable’ heroics of Gary Liddle.

The match was hanging finely in the balance deep into stoppage time with Gavan Holohan cancelling out Sutton’s early opener from Isaac Olaofe.

With just seconds remaining, David Ajiboye’s effort looked a certain Sutton goal as it deflected off Holohan and past Ben Killip only for Liddle to somehow flick it over the crossbar. It was a clearance that left Pools boss Dave Challinor questioning whether it was a legal one or not.

“I don’t know how he got that over, where it’s hit, I have no idea,” Challinor admitted.

“From our perspective, we were right behind it and it was flying in. I wasn’t sure if it hit his hand at first or his head or his shoulder.

“I haven’t got a clue but we got away with one and we go away with a point which we’ll take but we’re also disappointed because we wanted three.”

Holohan was right in the thick of the action as the ball looped off him toward the Pools goal.

He said: “The clearance was unbelievable, I think!”

“I’ve not actually seen it, I’ve gone to block it and it has come off my back and all I could see was the ball going over the bar and the lads were all telling me it was unbelievable.”
