After losing 5-0 to Torquay United last weekend, Challinor made six changes to the side with new Blackburn Rovers loanee Tyler Magloire coming straight into the starting 11.

As a result, Pools looked more solid and composed as they forced extra-time against the League Two outfit before goals from substitutes Bruno Andrade and Mani Dieseruvwe saw The Ammies progress.

While Challinor was disappointed not to see his side progress to the second round of the prestigious cup competition, he felt there was plenty of positives to take from the performance.

“I’m disappointed to lose but we wanted a reaction from last week and I can’t be any happier with the game plan we set out and how it was carried out,” he said following the full-time whistle.

“I can be critical of the fact that we didn’t score when we got the opportunities.

“Playing as we did, we wanted to play them on the counter and we had some good opportunities to score from that.

“We’ve got lads in there saying that they should have scored but those are the fine margins between winning and losing. Being clinical is what separates the very best players from good and average players.

“Salford will know they’ve been in a game and that was virtually their full-strength side. They might have thought it was an opportunity to score some goals against a side who were hurting after being beaten 5-0 – that wasn’t the case.”
