Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor discusses three key decisions in Boreham Wood draw

The thrilling match saw Pools come from two goals down late on to snatch a point thanks to strikes from Nicky Featherstone and Gime Toure.

But it was the first half which saw referee Karl Evans forced to make three potentially game changing decisions.

The first came after 26-minutes when after a few second delay, a penalty was awarded to Boreham Wood – much to the confusion of several Pools players.

On the incident Challinor commented: “I thought it was a penalty, I think it was Raynesy [Michael Raynes] not moving his feet quickly enough.

“It’s difficult to see but I think in the final third, we have a tendency to defend too passively and don’t get close enough to people or defend well one v one.

“If you do that against players with pace and ability then you’re going to be in trouble. We were slightly fortunate not to concede before that point anyway.

“You can afford to jockey around the halfway line but in the defensive third you’ve got to get close to people and tackle, we need to get better at it.”

Nicke Kabamba then had a close range effort somehow cleared off the line though replays suggested that the ball may have just been over. Featherstone was then shown a yellow card soon after which Boreham Wood players felt should have been red, particularly when the midfielder netted the goal that got the hosts back into the game.

“I’ve seen the picture and it looked in so I’m not sure how we haven’t scored and if we haven’t scored I’m wondering more how the goalkeeper still has his teeth in his mouth because it looked like one of them where bodies were coming together, the ball has to end up in the net for me,” Challinor added.

“It’s just that bit of clinicalness and confidence because that should be smashed in and we should be level and the game changes, it wasn’t to be.

“Nicky’s yellow card could have been a problem but I haven’t seen it back so I don’t know.”
