Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor questions Ben Killip's decision making during Sutton United draw but hopes goalkeeper can bounce back after coronavirus suspension

Dave Challinor hopes Ben Killip’s ‘mistake’ in the 1-1 draw at Sutton United is something the Hartlepool United goalkeeper can move on from when given the chance.

Killip was taken out of the side for over a month at the start of 2020 but returned with a string of solid performances.

But just three minutes into the match at Sutton, Killip attempted to clear Timi Odusina’s back pass only for it to cannon back off the charging Isaac Olaofe and into the back of the net to give the home side the lead.

Over a week on and the Pools goalkeeper won’t have the chance to bounce back from the error due to the National League’s suspension due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Challinor had previously discussed that Killip’s concentration was something that he’d be looking to work on and was disappointed to witness a something of a set-back at Gander Green Lane.

“It was exactly that, it’s another decision making mistake,” said the Hartlepool manager.

“In fairness, he’d got out of that and not made any recently. It’s obviously something that was highlighted but it was synonymous of our entire first-half performance at Sutton.

“Sometimes players get drawn into thinking they’re playing on a 3G pitch, lovely, it’s going to be like a testimonial type game where everyone passes it, no one closes down and it never gets kicked forward.

“It was never going to be like that and that’s where the mistakes come from.”
