Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor reacts to 2-1 defeat at Woking

Gime Toure fired the visitors ahead from the penalty spot in the first half before The Cardinals fought back after the break with a close range strike from Jake Hyde before Dave Tarpey netted the winner from the edge of the box in the closing stages.

The defeat was Challinor’s first in six games at United manager and one he feels was avoidable.

“I had to say some harsh words because we were in control but have came out of the game with nothing due to poor decision making and bad goals conceded,” he said following the full-time whistle.

“This has been a running theme for us which needs to change and the finger is always going to be pointed at the goalkeeper and defenders for the goals we’re conceding but they’re not solely responsible.

“As a defender myself, I’d be taking it personally if you can’t keep the ball out of your net.

“We’ve got to do that better and recognise the situations in games because it should suit us when we’re in front because if we’re doing our jobs defensively we should be able to pick passes and do our job on the counter attack.”

Pools looked fairly comfortable after taking the lead through Toure’s penalty but an uncleared ball into the box was pounced on by Hyde and allowed Woking to get back into the game.

The hosts then gathered momentum and turned the game on its head through Tarpey’s fine match winner before seeing the game out with relative ease.

Challinor’s side still had a late chance to snatch a draw when the ball cannoned back off the crossbar following a corner.

“Goals change games, the first one we conceded was a really poor one,” added the United boss.

“They would say their second was a really good goal but you can always pick holes in every goal we concede.

“There wasn’t much to choose between the sides but you could say one great goal ultimately wins the game for them.”
