Gavan Holohan put Pools ahead early in the second half before a devastating finish from Sam Smart seconds after the restart levelled things up straight away.

Shelton was then in the right place as the right time to stroke the home side back into the lead as they picked up a crucial three points at Victoria Park.

It was a comfortable evening on the whole for Pools as they were in control for the majority of the game despite a dismal first half of football.

“I’m not sure I can repeat what was said at half-time but the gaffer got into us to be fair, he said it was too slow, it was boring and it felt like that on the pitch,” Shelton admitted.

“It wasn’t good enough as a team, especially at home and we know that.

“You want to create and make things happen at home and we weren’t doing that so it was boring for us to play in so it must have been even worse from the stands.

“Words were said at half-time, we were there for the full 15-minutes talking, the referee had to get us out.

“But we got a reaction from it and things swung in our favour.

“I enjoyed scoring, it came from Kitch and Gav down the left and the gaffer was just telling me to get into the box with the formation that we were playing with me and Gus being allowed to get further forward.

“When the ball went wide I just moved into the box and I timed my run, I was screaming for Kitch to pull it back which he did for once and it was just about timing my connection well and not putting it over.

“I’ve tried to get forward and have a few shots since I’ve been here and a few have gone out of the stadium!

“So it was nice to find the back of the net especially in front of the home fans behind the goal when it proves to be the winner.”
