Pools will be looking to secure their place in the first round of the prestigious cup competition with victory at the New Manor Ground on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

And Shelton – who played briefly for the previous incarnation of Ilkeston Town, Ilkeston FC, in 2016 – hopes to continue Hartlepool’s positive start to the new season against his former club.

“We feel good, we’ve had a really good start to the season,” he told The Mail.

"We’re unbeaten and probably should have won the game against Bromley so we’re full of confidence but Ilkeston are a good side and I’m sure they’ll make it difficult for us.

"It’s on [BBC Sport] and will probably be their biggest game of the season so we’re not going there thinking it’s going to be a walk in the park or anything like that.

“I got a few messages when the draw was made saying it’ll be good to see you back down here and I wasn’t sure what they were talking about but it’ll be good to see some familiar faces.

"I was there for around six months, it was a good club with a lot of good people and their fans are really passionate which is always good when you’re a young player.

"It’s a brilliant draw for both of us really. For them, it’s their biggest game of the season and they’ll be looking to put on a show but also for us to get the chance to play in front of a crowd and get into the first round.”

With just two previous FA Cup appearances under his belt for Salford City and Woking respectively, Shelton’s previous experience in the competition is limited. But he’s hoping to change things with Pools this year.

“Personally, I haven’t done particularly well in the FA Cup,” he admitted.

"Last season with Salford, we got knocked out early and then I was obviously cup-tied here when Pools had a good run.

"So not too many fond memories but hopefully we can make some this year.”
