Keith Curle’s side were twice pegged back in the second half having initially trailed thanks to Alex Pattison's fourth minute opener. Pattison capitalised on some poor Hartlepool defending to put Harrogate into an early lead to set alarm bells ringing around the Suit Direct Stadium.
But Josh Umerah scored his 11th goal of the season to level things up on half-time before Mohamad Sylla gave Pools the lead soon after the restart.
It was a lead which was short-lived as Sam Folarin equalised for Harrogate minutes after going behind before Mark Shelton restored Hartlepool’s advantage with an excellent finish in what was a dramatic second half.
But Curle's side were unable to hang on as George Thomson arrowed into the corner to earn Harrogate a share of the points.
And here is how Pools were rated in their New Year’s Day draw:

9. Jack Hamilton - 6
Won plenty in the air again. Needs more people around him to make second contacts. Flashed one wide of the post before taking one flush in the face. (Credit: Mark Fletcher | MI News) Photo: Mark Fletcher

10. Joe Grey - 7
First league start and put in a real shift. One of few who can hold their heads up from the first half as he ran the lines well. Clever flick for Umerah in the build-up for Pools’ first goal and had a hand in the second. Close to providing the winner in the closing stages when beating Headley well to find Umerah. 11. Josh Umerah - 6
An up and down afternoon. Kept up his good record against Harrogate with a smart finish at the near post. Got a needless booking in what was a frustrating first half. (Credit: Mark Fletcher | MI News) Photo: Mark Fletcher

12. Wes McDonald - NA
Brought on in the final 10 minutes to try and source a winner. (Credit: Mark Fletcher | MI News) Photo: Mark Fletcher
