A slow start to the game saw Pools fall two behind as Ben House and then Tyrone Barnett struck for the hosts.
Dave Challinor’s side rallied though, and put the pressure on their hosts with little reward – until Joe Grey’s late volley, which proved merely a consolation despite a late spell of heavy pressure.
But who impressed at the Silverlake Stadium, and who still has work to do? Scroll down as Mark Donnelly dishes out his merit marks from the clash:
1. Ben Killip
A moment of indecision between the stopper and Timi Odusina proved costly early on, but Killip had little to do in the first half other than twice pick the ball out of his net. It was a similar story in the second half as Pools pushed forward. 5 Photo: Frank Reid
2. David Ferguson
Came close with an effort from range in the first-half and put in a series of superb deliveries in the second half, including the one that led to the late Joe Grey goal. 6 Photo: Mark Fletcher
3. Timi Odusina
Recovered well from the early setback with a number of excellent clearances and interceptions. 6 Photo: Mark Fletcher
4. Ryan Johnson
Didn't have a great deal to do at the back and looked to drive the side forward, but his distribution from deep was erratic. 5 Photo: Mark Fletcher
