After a nervy, dramatic and chaotic National League play-off final, the club have secured their place back in the EFL after four years in non-league.
Luke Armstrong’s fine first-half strike looked set to be enough for Dave Challinor’s side to achieve promotion, while the Gulls had two goals controversially ruled out for fouls in a dramatic game.
And that drama continued into stoppage time, where Torquay goalkeeper Lucas Covolan nodded home to send the game to extra time.
After a goalless extra half an hour, Pools triumphed on penalties to secure their place back in League Two for the 2021/22 season.
But who caught the eye in the play-off final?
Our Pools writer Dominic Scurr has dished out his ratings from the clash, with some high marks on show during what was a memorable afternoon at Ashton Gate:
1. Brad James
Saved by the referee twice as Torquay had two goals disallowed. Made several smart saves when called into action but was caught in no man’s land for Torquay’s late equaliser. Was the hero in the shoot-out with a fingertip save to send Pools to the Football League. 7 Photo: HUFC
2. Jamie Sterry
Defensively sound and his energy down the right was vital. 8 Photo: Frank Reid
3. Timi Odusina
Continued his sensational play-off form. 9 Photo: Mark Fletcher
4. Gary Liddle
Made a good block to deny Asa Hall early on. Played a vital role in keeping Torquay at bay. 9 Photo: Frank Reid
