Hartlepool United sign ex-Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday defender

Hartlepool United have signed experienced defender Rob Jones until the end of the season.

The centre-half has been training with the club for the past two weeks, having been released by Doncaster Rovers last month.

Jones played for Pools in yesterday’s 3-1 reserve-team win over Newcastle United at Benton and agreed to sign after the game following talks with boss Craig Hignett.

The 36-year-old has a wealth of experience, playing over 400 games, primarily with Grimsby Town, Hibs, Scunthorpe, Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster.

And, at 6ft 7in, he brings a masive physical presence to the backline.

Jones will be available for Saturday’s trip to Barnet and with Matthew Bates troubled by a back problem, he could be in contention to play.

The Stockton-born player had a spell as Rovers caretaker-manager following the sacking of Paul Dickov in 2015 and had worked as coach of Doncaster’s development side.

Jones had a decent goal-scoring record in his three and a half yars at the Keepmoat Stadium, scoring 11 goals in 78 appearances.
