Pools had to come from behind after Mason Burstow and Alex Gilbey cancelled out Joe Grey’s excellent opener.

But Graeme Lee’s side don’t know when they’re beaten in cup football this season and substitute Luke Molyneux grabbed a stunning equaliser within minutes of being introduced.

And it was no less than Pools merited after they created a number of opportunities against the League One side with a penalty shootout the least they deserved.

Ben Killip, who had been at fault earlier in the game for Burstow’s equaliser, redeemed himself with a strong save to deny Elliot Lee and hand Pools the advantage in the shootout following Molyneux’s conversion.

And it was left to Sterry to settle the tie and, just like at Ashton Gate last season, the fullback calmly dispatched from 12 yards much to the delight of Pools supporters.

And here is how the 90 minutes played out.

Albie Morgan is eyeing up EFL Trophy glory as the Charlton Athletic prepare for a quarter-final tie against Hartlepool United.

Speaking with London News Online, Addicks midfielder Morgan admitted the opportunity of playing at Wembley is now a real prospect and is why Johnnie Jackson’s side will be doing their utmost at the Suit Direct Stadium tonight.

“Why not? It’s a trophy to win and a chance to play at Wembley,” he said.

“We want it as a club, going and achieving something. I think it’s frowned upon, the competition, but any player in the team would love the chance to go and play at Wembley. Especially if they haven’t played there before, like myself.

“I’d love to go all the way. It would be a great achievement if we end up winning it.”

Graeme Lee wants to replicate his success as a player in the EFL Trophy as a manager with Hartlepool United.

The former Pools defender grabbed an extra-time winner back in 2007 as Doncaster beat Bristol Rovers 3-2 at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium to lift what was then known as the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, and the 43-year-old would love to enjoy a similar experience as a manager with Pools this season.

“For any player having these moments should be something to look forward to,” said Lee.

“I’ve been there and done it. It was an unbelievable day and for me, winning that was one of the highlights of my career.”

Jamie Sterry is available for selection again after he was forced to sit out Hartlepool United’s last two League Two fixtures following a red card picked up late in the defeat at Bristol Rovers.

Reagan Ogle has deputised in Sterry’s absence at fullback and gives Graeme Lee a decision to make in defence this evening as to whether he sticks with the former Accrington Stanley man and keeps Sterry for Saturday’s trip to Exeter City or whether he brings the ex-Newcastle United defender straight back into contention.

Lee trialled a change in system in the previous round of this competition with four in defence and may do similar here this evening with Joe Grey likely to be in contention.

Marcus Carver remains a doubt for Hartlepool United this evening after a slight groin injury kept him out of the matchday squad at the weekend.

Carver started in back-to-back games since his arrival from Southport before missing out the draw with Stevenage.

“He’s got a slight groin strain,” said Lee.

“He impacted fantastically well in the Bristol Rovers game but fatigued after about 60 minutes. It’s hard for us to assess where he is without looking at his games.

“You could see with the Carlisle game he just looked a little bit jaded. He’s an honest lad and he wants to graft and do everything so he says he’s fine and then on Thursday morning he tightened up in the warm-up and when we’ve checked it, it’s a slight groin strain.

“Not too bad, we pulled him out quick enough so hopefully he’ll be in contention next week.”

It’s matchday!

Hello and welcome back to the Suit Direct Stadium as Hartlepool United host Charlton Athletic in the quarter-finals of the papa John’s Trophy.

Pools have already enjoyed plenty of success over teams from the division above in this competition after victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers in the previous rounds.

Graeme Lee’s side will be hoping to bounce back after being held on home soil by Stevenage at the weekend with a place in the last four up for grabs.

Stay tuned for all the team news and updates from the Suit Direct Stadium.
