Hartlepool boss Ronnie Moore hopes to extend David Mirfin deal and backs Scott Harrison to play in Championship

Boss Ronnie Moore was delighted to see his side start a crucial week with a 1-0 win over Wimbledon, with on-loan Scunthorpe United defender Mirfin again excelling.

His month-long loan expired on Saturday but Moore is confident he will be in the starting line-up away to the Daggers tomorrow.

Wayne Burnett’s side are 19th, just four points above the drop-zone, while Pools remain rooted to the bottom but are now six points from safety.

Ahead of the trip, Moore has urged his players not to waste the opportunity of building on the Dons win.

Moore told SportMail: “We said this week is a big, big week for the club.

“Against Wimbledon we looked like we wanted to win it second half, so let’s not waste the opportunity we have now got.

“We are clawing other teams back in but we can’t waste what we have done.

“We need to build on it,” added Moore.

The chances of doing just that will be boosted if Pools can extend the loan deal of Iron defender Mirfin.

He joined on Deadline Day and has played every game since under Moore, impressing alongside Scott Harrison.

Moore told SportMail: “Mirf wants to stay and I see no reason why it won’t go through.

“He’s took another knock to the nose, but he’s been steady and helps the back four.

“Alongside him Scott was strong, won some great headers and he can be a player – can play at a higher standard.

“In the Championship – why not?

“He covers the ground, he’s a kid learning his trade, but is strong and wins his headers.

“I think Mirf will benefit him and Dan Jones will wonder what he’s done wrong but playing four at the back there’s not a lot I can do.”

At one stage in the first-half, Mirfin nutmegged a Dons defender on the edge of their box before dipping a volley inches over the bar after the break.

Moore joked: “Mirf thought he was Ronaldo – nutmegging people and volleying over the bar.

“He forgets he’s a five and not a nine!”
