Newcastle United striker can bring goals and pace to Hartlepool United

The 19-year-old Newcastle United striker joined Pools on a month-long loan deal on a busy Friday, which also saw goalkeeper Jon Maxted sign a permanent contract.

Murray was pleased to add two more faces to his squad and is looking forward to working with the pair.

Campbell trained with his new team-mates at Maiden Castle yesterday and was due to make his debut in the crunch Sky Bet League Two match at home to York today.

The England Under-19 international will link up again with Pools assistant manager Willie Donachie, who used to be the reserve-team manager at Newcastle.

“Adam has goals in him but he also has great pace,” Murray told SportMail.

“We have been lacking that up front and he really has pace in abundance.

“Technically he is very good and he has some pedigree because he has been out on loan elsewhere and spent time at St Mirren.

“He is someone I looked at and though he may be young, he has played a lot of games.

“Willie knows him from his time at Newcastle and I am looking forward to seeing him in action,” said Murray, who was speaking ahead of the York match at Victoria Park.

Campbell is a product of the renowned Wallsend Boys Club and made his senior debut for Newcastle in the Europa League in 2012 and he also featured twice in the Premier League.

The pacy striker from North Shields, who has been handed shirt number 29, has previously featured for Carlisle United, St Mirren and Fleetwood Town on loan.

His loan spell runs until December 20 and will take in league games against Wycombe Wanderers, Burton Albion and Oxford United as well as the FA Cup second round clash against Blyth Spartans.

The teenager, who turns 20 in January, has already managed to score once at the Vic this season, netting for Newcastle’s U21 against Middlesbrough last month in his first match since undergoing a hernia operation.

Maxted, meanwhile, has been brought in to provide much-needed cover to number one stopper Scott Flinders.

The 21-year-old former Doncaster Rovers keeper has been training with the club and featured in reserve matches against Gateshead and Middlesbrough.

Pools had been without a recognised reserve since Andy Rafferty left in August.

Murray told SportMail: “I am pleased to have the goalkeeper situation sorted.

“Jon has signed a permanent contract which means we don’t have to get a loan keeper in and it frees up a loan spot in the squad.

“We have two permanent keepers now, which is good, and I was pleased to get one in at last.

“I knew him from my time at Oldham, Jon spent a bit of time there.”

Maxted beat off competition from Joe Cracknell, from Hull City and ex-Peterborough United keeper Aidan Grant to win a contract.

Murray added: “You go for the best all-rounder, age-wise, who is most reliable and Jon stood out.

“It will help relieve some of the pressure on Scott and we now have someone on the bench.

“It is good to have another keeper in training every day as well, rather than having to beg, steal and borrow and use keepers from the youth team.

“I am looking forward to working with both of them.”

Maxted played against Pools in the pre-season friendly with Bradford Park Avenue.
