Yeovil 1 Hartlepool United 2: Winning ugly is beautiful for Ronnie Moore

It is hardly the sort of thing you ask for when your Fairy Godmother grants you three wishes.

But for Moore it was a necessity and the 2-1 success at Yeovil Town ended a four-match run without a League Two win.

It now gives them something to build on with two games at Victoria Park around the corner.

Moore said: “It was a poor, scrappy game, it’s probably been as bad as we’ve played this season.

“But I said last week it would be nice to come off one day and say how poor we’ve been yet we win.

“Saturday certainly wasn’t us, the passing wasn’t good, we’ve given it away for fun.

“I thought a draw would have been a fair result, but we’ll take the win, no doubt about that.

“We got the great point last week, another three here and now we have two home games to come.”

A 1-1 draw was looking likely after former Pools loan striker Ryan Bird equalised the 32nd-minute Pools opener when Scott Fenwick headed in Jake Carroll’s free-kick.

There wasn’t much to choose between the teams and the second half had little in the way of gilt-edged chances.

But Moore’s first two subs combined to clinch maximum points at the end of a good team move.

Kudus Oyenuga made a real ‘horlicks’ of his attempt at goal but the ball dropped kindly for Brad Walker to beat Artur Krysiak.

“I was pleased we were able to grind out the result without playing well,” said Moore.

“Paul Sturrock is probably thinking ‘how have we lost it?’ but that’s football sometimes.

“The players kept going and going, we made a couple of changes, and the two subs we brought on have combined for the winner.

“I think Kudus was shooting but the ball fell to Brad and he put it in.

“It’s a nice feeling. Last time we were at Exeter and we lose to the last kick of the game.”
