The mystery? One goal and three different scorers. I will try to sum it up briefly.

Jake Carroll swung over a left-footed free-kick from wide on the right touchline, Andrew Boyce jumped and did no appear to get his head to it and the same went for Scott Fenwick on the six-yard line.

The ball appeared to miss everyone. It certainly missed the keeper, Artur Krysiak watching helplessly as it went in his top right corner.

Who scored? All of them, or so they claimed.

To have two players fighting over a goal is not uncommon. But three?

Admittedly, I was around 75 yards away with failing eyes, but this reporter was sure it had gone in with no-one touching it. Hartlepool United’s media manager, Mark Simpson, thought the same.

Further down the press box, Nick Loughlin of the Northern Echo was adamant it was Fenwick’s goal.

The debate went on all game. Even after the match it was as clear as mud, though the referee, Fred Graham, seemed to end the debate by awarding it to Carroll.

Later, Pools awarded it to Fenwick who, apparently, got the faintest of touches.

TV replays were inconclusive, if only they had ‘Snicko’ to see if it actually touched anyone!

The man who later scored the winner probably had as good a view as anyone and he did not know either!

“For the first goal I was actually warming up down that side,” said Walker.

“I saw the free-kick from Jake and I knew it would be a great delivery.

“It was put into a dangerous area, I saw Boycey get up for the header and then Scotty as well.

“Scotty ran one way, Boycey the other and Jake was celebrating himself – they are all claiming it.

“It was a great delivery and we see those goals scored when free-kicks are hit with such good delivery and they go all the way through to the back post and in.

“Whoever got the goal, it doesn’t matter, we got the three points.”
