The 17-year-old scored late on as Hartlepool United fell to a disappointing defeat on the road at Eastleigh, with Challinor’s side dropping two places to fifth in the National League.

This season is very much a development one for Grey, with Challinor admitting anything he provides at first team level in terms of goals and assists should be seen as a bonus.

Late on in the game on Tuesday evening, David Ferguson’s fine cross from the left caused havoc in the Eastleigh backline and substitute Grey fired home on the volley from close range.

“You sometimes forget how young he is, a second year scholar, he has worked his socks off and been great, he is a real part of the group on merit and will continue to work hard.

“We will continue to work with him. With natural growth and us working with him, getting up to the physical demands then we believe he has a chance.

“He is really willing and wants to listen, he works hard and will back himself.

“Delighted to get a goal, hopefully the first of many.

“Anything we get from him is a bonus this year, it was going to be a development year for him, if he can get games that will be a massive plus for him.

Grey signed his first professional contract with the club in August last year.

The 17-year-old striker joined the Pools Youth Academy last year from Wallsend Boys Club and quickly made a good impression on the coaching staff.

He made four appearances in the first team squad last season.
