It was a season to remember for Hartlepool United, but how much did they earn in prize and television money over the course of the campaign?

Pools secured promotion from the National League via the play-offs in the most dramatic fashion with a 5-4 penalty shoot out victory against Torquay United at Ashton Gate after the game ended 1-1.

But neither Hartlepool or National League champions Sutton United received any prize money as a result of their promotion from the fifth tier. Now the clubs are in the Football League, the amount of funding they receive significantly increased by around £1 million, however they received nothing in terms of promotion prize money.

Dave Challinor’s side did receive a small financial boost as a result of their cup performances. Their run to the FA Cup first round where they were beaten 2-0 after extra-time at Salford City netted the club a total of £15,032 in prize money. The live BBC broadcast 6-0 win at Ilkeston Town in the fourth qualifying round will have seen the club earn around £12,500 in live broadcast fees too.

The FA Trophy didn’t prove quite so lucrative for Pools as their first round penalty shoot out defeat at Halifax Town saw them awarded just £775 in total – still more than they received for their play-off success!

While Pools received no prize money from the National League as such, the fact that nine of their matches were broadcast live on BT Sport over the course of the season gave the club a tidy financial boost.

Pools’ home matches against Torquay United, Barnet, Notts County, Chesterfield and Bromley saw the club earn £6,000 per match while the away games at Eastleigh (abandoned), Sutton United, Stockport County and the promotion final at Ashton Gate earned the club £2,000 each. In total, Hartlepool earned £38,000 as a result of the live BT Sport broadcasts.

Vanarama also paid £1,200 to Hartlepool United s chosen charities over the course of the season from Man of the Match awards following live BT Sport matches.

According to figures from FA and National League sources, Pools should have earned £66,307 in prize and television money over the course of the 2020-21 campaign.
