Pools had lost back-to-back National League fixtures before the match and hadn’t won on home turf since the opening day of the season.

Yet two goals from new signing Luke Armstrong either side of half-time gave the hosts a deserved three points.

"I think it was a professional performance and the energy levels and work rate were spot on,” said Challinor.

“We played with a bit of a different shape which probably allowed them a bit more possession towards the end of the first half than we would have liked.

“We wanted to persevere with that and see what it brought us with having two up the top end of the pitch.

“It’s really pleasing and hopefully the players take a lot from it.”

On Armstrong’s two goals, Challinor added: “It’s a simple game isn't it, he scores two from five yards. If you get 10-15 of them a season you are on your way to 20 goals.

“They are goalscorers' finishes, they are not smashing them in from 25-30 yards, they are poacher’s finishes and we’ll put crosses in from both sides normally and if you put yourself between the sticks you will get chances.

“Even for the first one there is a composure about his finish not to panic and slash at it, to take it around the keeper.

“I’m really pleased for him, it’s a great start for him and I’m sure he’ll have a really good time with us.”
