Pools were put to the sword by a strong Boro side, but manager Craig Hignett will no doubt be pleased with aspects of what was a promising performance. And our Hartlepool United writer, Dominic Scurr, has dished out some fairly strong player ratings following the clash. Scroll down and click through the pages to see who he felt shone and struggled:
5. Michael Raynes - 6
A far busier game for the Pools captain for the day compared to the previous three. Will be disappointed with the second and third goals in particular but continued to lead the back line commendably. Photo: FRANK REID
6. Gus Mafuta - 6
Conceded a few cheap free-kicks, the first of which led to the opening goal. Grew into the game and started to become more commanding in possession, slipping a good ball through to Holohan for Pools’ best chance of the first half. Photo: FRANK REID
7. Jason Kennedy - 7
Often found the pace and movement of Middlesbrough’s midfield difficult to keep up with but remained strong and confident when on the ball. Craig Hignett has a tough call to make given the midfielder’s impressive trial spell. Photo: FRANK REID
8. Gavan Holohan - 7
Had Pools’ best chance of the first half and was always looking to get about the pitch. Comfortable in possession against a strong Boro midfield. Photo: FRANK REID
