Why Hartlepool United, Notts County, Yeovil Town, Wrexham and Chesterfield SHOULD see their season declared null and void - according to one National League boss

Wrexham boss Dean Keates believes that there is no alternative to declaring the National League season null and void – if the current campaign cannot be continued.

With the 2019/20 season currently suspended indefinitely, National League sides have been asked to vote on whether or not the current season should be scrapped or if attempts should be made to play to a finish.

And should the season be cancelled, there remain a number of questions over how the final standings would be determined – with options such as points-per-game mooted.

But Keates feels that there would be no other option than to declare the campaign null and void – as he believes that much could change in the nine games that are left to be played.

“It is harsh on the teams chasing things in all divisions but I can’t see how it can be worked out,” he said, speaking to The Leader.

“How are our league going to do it?

“You can’t please everybody on what they do and which they feel is the best way to go.

“There is no-one running away with the league as it stands or no-one cut that far adrift in the relegation slots that I find it hard not to see past them null and voiding the season.”

No-one has actually been promoted yet,” he continued.

“We are not talking about two or three games, there are 27 points left to play for and a lot can happen in nine games.

“At the start of the season, most people don’t any take notice of the league table until after about 10 games, and we are talking one game less here.

“After 10 games, you can see who has got a little bit of form and stuff like that.

“These nine games are a bit different because there is more pressure on these nine games, and anything can happen.

“Mid-table teams can relax more because they have got nothing to play for, and they can go to a team at the top of the league and turn them over because there is no pressure on them. Pressure makes people make silly decisions.”
