A Jordan Storey own goal and Marcus Tavernier header gave the Teessiders all three points to keep their faint play-off hopes alive.

Boro were helped after Preston captain Alan Browne was shown a red card in the first half, but there were still some impressive performances for Neil Warnock’s side.

Centre-back pairing Dael Fry and Grant Hall earned praise, while wingers Yannick Bolasie and Neeskens Kebano, on loan from Everton and Fulham respectively, also caught the eye.

Here’s how some fans reacted on social media.

@nedley_paul: Very impressed with every player tonight. Mentions to Bola, Kebano, and Bolasie .. And, a huge well done to the whole team .. !!!

@Smithy_MFC84: Both Bolasie and Kebano and have offered it in flashes, but tonight they looked hungry and on top form. First time they’ve consistently threatened throughout a game, and it was bloody exciting I have to say.

@THEREALBORO: Kebano has been an inspired signing and now Bolasie is getting fitter looks a real threat. Would be tempted to use NML as a central striker when he's fit enough to start

@erimusfootball: Another good win for them Reds. Loving Kebano and Bolasie on the wings. Just hope that we can keep the majority of these lads together for next season

@turnergeorge99: Hall and Fry at the back could be a similar partnership to the Gibson and Ayala one . Like the look of it a lot

@savvery42: Hall and Fry brick wall

@leemcm1976: Grant Hall is some player, him.and Fry are a fantastic partnership at the back

@LewisThompson7: After having a team of plodders, for what seems like years now, having the pace of Kebano and Bolasie in our team is a joy. We look so good in attack and on the break these days, we need to do everything to get at least one of the two next season

@TerryBywater07: I know it's very easy to say after a win but I feel very happy with this Boro team. If we don't reach the play-offs we must do all we can to try and keep this group together.
