Ashley Fletcher scored the only goal of the game nine minutes after half-time, but while many were relieved to take three points, some were unconvinced by the display.

Here’s how some fans reacted on social media:

@Chips19: Finally. 3 points. Defended well, made good chances. But a a vital 3 points.

@LukeyPenno: Vital result but don’t let that paper over the cracks. About 36% possession at home wasnt it... against bottom of the league.

@Smithy_MFC84: Wasn’t pretty to watch, and it could’ve been made easier had we tucked away the clear chances we had, but in the end a win is a win. Now, let’s hope that’s a springboard to a good run of form that sees us climb the table. Clean sheet for Pears too

@buzza1991: Woodgate took the time after the game to walk round (piss wet through) to every stand and applaud the supporters. He might not be everybody’s cup of tea but he is a proper boro fan. Could see what it meant to him.

@alexhardy1987: Needed for Woodgate to keep his job, aye. What a dire game that was. I appreciate the weather didn’t help, but we looked pretty poor against a poor team at times.

@BoroNathan: Daniel Ayala was incredible. Shame we’ve only got 6 weeks left of him. Coulson, Tavernier, Britt did well aswell

@pmsmith1973: Tonight’s win just prolongs the inevitable, I said I’d give him until Christmas but fear it will be too late! He’s been hung out to dry by the club, he was the cheap option and they should hang their heads in shame!

@Matt_Rowney: A win is a win. But the performance did nothing did my confidence, Barnsley were AWFUL. Let's hope we can build on it and that this win hasnt just papered over the cracks. I'm still far from convinced.

@BenWalker675: Bring on Leeds Saturday

@bradwatson1997: Do I think Woodgate can keep us up? Absolutely not. I’m gonna get carried with away with a scrappy 1-0 win against a team with 1 win in 18 games? Nope. Am I happy we won yup

@MfcLiam: I know a lot may disagree but I'll always back Woodgate till the end, we've got a small and young squad and January will be interesting
