But who were the winners and losers from the second tier? Our Boro writer Joe Nicholson takes a closer look at events over the last few days – scroll down and flick through our picture gallery to see who shone and struggled:
1. W: Djed Spence
It was a mixed night for the Boro teenager who was forced off with a dead leg early in the second half. The young full-back was enjoying a fine game up until that point and Boro boss Neil Warnock clearly rates him highly. "We thought he'd destroy them (Hull) and he was but he couldn't stay on," said Warnock after the match. Photo: Getty Images
2. L: George Friend
The Boro skipper didn't have a terrible game and could be heard barking out instructions to his team-mates throughout. Friend did lose a couple of headers against Hull striker Josh Magennis, though, and was caught out of position for the winning goal. Photo: George Wood
3. W: Mallik Wilks
Hull weren't sure if the former Leeds winger was going to be able to play against Boro after his loan contract from Barnsley expired. There was an option to make the transfer permanent, though, and Wilks netted a crucial stoppage-time winner for the Tigers. Photo: George Wood
4. L: Wigan Athletic
Boro and Hull could have a relegation safety net after Wigan went into administration this week. The EFL have announced the Latics will be hit with a 12-point penalty if they finish above the relegation places which would leave Paul Cook's side four points from safety. Photo: Nathan Stirk
