Martin Braithwaite's shock move to Barcelona has been confirmed - and it will provide Middlesbrough with a healthy financial boost.

The former Boro forward left Teesside in the summer for Leganes and a sell-on clause was negotiated, which is believed to be around 10 to 25 per cent of the fee.

Braithwaite signed a four-a-half-year contract with Barca for a fee of €18million. That converts into £15m in the current exchange rate.

And now his transfer to the La Liga giants has been sealed, Boro are likely to receive between £1.5million and £3.75m for the shock transfer.

Jonathan Woodgate addressed Braithwaite’s move to the Catalans in his Barnsley pre-match press conference.

“I like him as a player,” said the Boro head coach. “I thought he was a really good player and I would have liked to keep him but he wanted to leave.

“What I’ll say to Martin is in that pre-season he came in and trained really well, fantastically well in fact.

“He played the Hartlepool game and went to Austria and trained really well. He’s a really talented player, it just didn’t click for him.

“I think the reason why he’s going is because they can only go for a certain player in La Liga. He has a buyout clause, how many players have a buyout clause in La Liga? How many players are available? There are different players and Martin is available.”

Braithwaite will be formally introduced as a Barcelona player from 5pm today.
