With Boro 1-0 up courtesy of George Saville’s finish, Robins boss Dean Holden was adamant his team should have been awarded a spot kick when Paddy McNair collided with Tyreeq Bakinson late in the game.

"I have to say though, it was a stonewall penalty against Tyreeq Bakinson,” said Holden after the match.

“How he hasn’t given that is beyond me. Again we can’t control referees, we can just control our performance and that wasn’t good enough tonight."

The incident was assessed on the EFL’s highlights show on Quest, when studio guest Jobi McAnuff was asked about the decision.

“Is he really going to get there?” said the former Reading midfielder. “I think it definitely falls into the category if that’s somewhere else on the pitch it’s probably a foul.

“It’s a shoulder barge and clearly he goes down under the contact.”

Boro boss Neil Warnock will feel his side deserved a bit of luck after his side were recently on the wrong end of a crucial decision.

Warnock was furious after Jonny Howson’s goal against Reading was disallowed for offside when the midfielder appeared to be in line with the last defender.

"It disappoints me that a linesman looking straight across can't see it's onside,” said Warnock after the goalless draw with the Royals. “Even their IT lad was telling us it was onside.”
